What are Policing Priorities?

Policing Priorities establish what we want the Garda Síochána to give the most attention to in any given year, in order to deliver an effective policing service for you.

Why do we need your input on Policing Priorities?

We want your views on Policing Priorities for the Garda Síochána to help us to understand how you would like to see policing resources allocated in 2022. You can share your views by taking part in this online public consultation.

How do I take part in the consultation?

We ask you to allocate or ‘spend’ 70 points across 24 policing activities, under four areas of policing. How you decide to allocate your points will show us how you believe policing time, resources and attention should be prioritised. 

This means you will have to make difficult decisions, as not every activity can be a priority. To help you do this, we have provided information for each that sets out what is involved in that activity. It is important that you read this information.

If you are under 18, you must ask a parent or guardian before participating.

Will it be anonymous?

Yes, all replies are anonymous.

How do I get started?

Click on Get Started below. There are four areas of policing. Under each area, we ask you to allocate a number of points from 0 to 5 to each policing activity (5 being the most important and 0 being the least important). Use your mouse (or your finger on mobile devices) to move the sliding button for each activity. You can change your allocation of points as much as you want.

  • Each activity has an info button (i). If you want more information about an activity, click on the info button (i) beside it and a short explanation will appear. After reading this, click on Close to bring you back to the survey screen.
  • Your Points Spent and Points Remaining will appear at the top of the screen throughout. These will change as you allocate points to show you how many you have left to spend.

Once you are satisfied with how you have allocated your points, click Review and Finish. Here you will have an option to add any final comments you may have and review your points.

When you are happy with your choices please select Submit Choices and then click Continue.

After you do this, you will be directed to a short survey that we ask you to complete. This survey is optional.

The Policing Authority was established as an independent body to oversee the performance of the Garda Síochána in relation to policing services in Ireland. A key value is to listen to our stakeholders, and by gaining feedback about expectations and experiences, this then informs our work. The Authority is required by legislation to set Policing Priorities for the Garda Síochána, and we routinely seek the views of the public as part of this process. Policing Priorities are the areas that we want the Garda Síochána to direct their attention on in a given year. The views of the public gathered through this consultation will form one part of the determination of the Policing Priorities.
